Did you know?

I often hear of things that leave me saying, “I didn’t know that.”  I tell these tidbits to Darrel asking him, “Did you know that?”  I frequently come across these facts in my daily reading or while scanning the internet. The information gained leads to a little research and lengthy conversations about the topic.  Some may not be particularly valuable, but I find them interesting all the same.  I just read some fun facts in the Reader’s Digest that I am sharing with you.  Perhaps like me, they will also leave you saying, “I didn’t know that!”

Did You Know?

  1. There is only one letter of the alphabet that does not appear in any U.S. state name.  (Do you know what it is?)

  2. The longest English word is 189,819 letters long. (It is the full name for the protein nicknamed titin. By the way, there is some dispute about whether this is really a word.  So take this one with a grain of salt!)

  3. Your body loses up to 8 percent of water on a flight.

  4. The longest human neck is over seven inches.

  5. The world’s longest pizza is 1.15 miles long. (Made in Italy, it took 250 chefs and about 4,409 pounds of flour to make it.)

  6. The longest time for breath held underwater is 24 minutes 37.36 seconds. (By Budimir Sobat who set the record on March 27, 2021.)

  7. Gadsby is a 50,000-word novel written without using the letter “E.” (Called a lipogram, it was written by Ernest Vincent Wright in 1939.)

  8. The fastest reptile is the Leatherback sea turtle.

  9. The oldest surviving love poem was written in 2,000 BC.

  10. Hot water freezes faster than cold water.

While we are at it, here are a few riddles you might enjoy.

  1. I have cities, but no houses.  I have mountains, but no trees.  I have water, but no fish.  What am I?

  2. You see a boat filled with people.  It has not sunk, but when you look again you don’t see a single person on the boat.  Why?

  3. What English word has three consecutive double letters?

  4. What disappears as soon as you say its name?

  5. What are the next three letters in this combination? OTTFFSS
