Destination Delaware Art Museum

When my friend Linda came into the city for the day, we immediately knew what our activity would be. I am on a quest to take pictures in front of all of the art installations on the Delaware Discoveries Trail.  There are 13 painted murals located throughout the state.  So far, I have only visited two of them.  Linda wanted to join in the adventure of finding the next installation.  After a little investigating, we were off to the Delaware Art Museum.  We knew the mural would be outdoors so we began our search in the Copeland Sculpture Garden.  There are almost 20 sculptures in the garden all created by nationally recognized artists.  Installed around the grounds, the sculptures are also set amongst indigenous plants.

We finally discovered the elusive installation on the far side of the Studio building. Laura Erickson, an artist based in Rehoboth, painted the colorful mural. Linda patiently took pictures while I thought peacock thoughts.

While strolling through the garden, Linda and I stopped to console the ‘Crying Giant.’  A massive bronze sculpture created by Tom Otterness. I saw no signs posted and wondered if this could possibly be an interactive exhibit like his Silver Towers Playground sculpture.  Afterwards I found out otherwise. Oops... I told you Linda! :-)

Our excursion to the museum was nice but brief. A few days later, we were back again to venture inside with hubbies Darrel and Marshall.  We saw the historical exhibit, Afro-American Images 1971: The Vision of Percy Ricks.  The exhibition is an important collection featuring the works of numerous African American artists.    Percy Ricks was an artist, whose works exhibited throughout the US and received many distinguished honors.  He was an educator, community leader, advocate for the arts and greatly emphasized the influence of African American artists. Please take your family to experience this cultural treasure before it leaves in January 2022.

Our much enjoyed walk through the museum resulted in worked up appetites. After a quick stop to pick up rotisserie chicken and sides, we headed back to our house for lunch and conversation in front of a crackling fire. We were all in agreement with Linda, on this damp and chilly day it was indeed a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

Great times are never far away,

Amanda 😉
