Keep Digging

On one side of our front yard there is a circular flowerbed edged with rocks.  It was there when we moved in 18 years ago.   Darrel claimed the area as his own to care for and I stayed out of his way.  Recently, much to his dismay, that has changed.   Our friends, Jimmy and Beverly gifted us many trees and beautiful plants.  With much planting to be done, Bev and I scouted for more areas to use.  Darrel’s circular flowerbed seemed the perfect choice.  I announced our plans to take it over and was on the receiving end of one of my sweet Darrel’s special looks that he reserves just for me.

I noticed that a piece of the stone walkway led right to the circular flowerbed and then it stopped.  How strange I thought.  I got a shovel and started digging. I was pleasantly surprised to find buried underneath dirt and rocks the walkway continued.   Now I wanted to dig up the entire flowerbed to see what was underneath.  I excitedly told Darrel about my discovery.   He was not very impressed and said he would prefer that I leave things the way they were.   I told him I would put every ounce of dirt back if we did not like the final results.  He gave me a tarp to pile the dirt on top of then retreated leaving me to my own devices.  Left alone, I told myself if I uncovered a hidden treasure, I was not going to share it with him.  I also told myself if I heard the sound from “Jumanji,” I would immediately stop digging.

At my pace, the excavation might take a long while to complete.  It is slow going, labor intensive and dirty work but I am enjoying every moment of my summer adventure.  I am sunbaked and my arms are getting stronger.  The hard work really pays off when something new is revealed.  I uncovered a small area around the inside of the walkway that seems to go down several feet or maybe much deeper.  Could this be a wall not a walkway?  Could I possibly be uncovering an old fountain? Could it be a well?  Will I dig a hole to China?  (Haha…  Remember being told that as a child?)

I am not sure what we will learn about the history and original design of our 92-year-old home, only time will tell.  I will definitely document my findings and keep you updated.  For sure, I will keep digging.

Happy Summer,

Amanda 😎
